Aunque ella misma lo niega, no se puede dudar del talento que tiene la selectora Kirsty Pemberton. Sus motivaciones artísticas no engañan, resultan honestas y su música se define precisamente por no ser fácilmente etiquetable, pues representa el auge de un sonido pasado, sin perder de vista el futuro. Aprovechamos para entrevistarla y entender su forma de concebir la música.

How and when did you get into music and electronic music?

Err for most of my life, from an early age, as most kids do, from listening to parents records, and any other influences during our growing up. My dad was into such a varied amount, and his Kraftwerk lp’s – were probably on rotation, but obviosuly didnt know who it was in the early 70’s

¿Cómo y cuándo te metiste en la música? ¿Y en la música electrónica?

Deambulé durante la mayor parte de mi vida, desde una edad temprana, como lo hacen la mayoría de los niños, hasta que empecé a escuchar los registros de pistas de mis padre. 

What music has influenced you and are there any which would surprise you?

All music is an influence isn’t it. How boring a world would be if we only listened to one sound, we don’t eat the same thing everyday, so why listen to the same thing.

¿Qué música te ha influenciado y hay alguna que te sorprenda?

Toda la música es una influencia ¿no? Cuán aburrido sería un mundo si sólo escuchásemos un sonido… No comemos todos los días lo mismo, ¿verdad?, entonces, ¿para qué escuchar lo mismo?

London has always had a strong underground scene, how would you describe what it was like when you were younger.

It was fun, vibrant, exciting and some years were memorable, others not so, and it still is, despite some of the older generation thinking it was better in their days…. They need to get out more ☺

Londres siempre ha tenido una escena underground fuerte, ¿cómo describirías cómo era cuando eras más joven?

Fue divertido, vibrante, emocionante y algunos años después, hasta memorables…

How did you first break into Djing.

Hahaha, I’m not a DJ…. Just playing records is a passion, I have just been lucky that some people like the ones I play, so the for past 8 years or so, for those mad enough to ask me.

¿Cómo te iniciaste en el Djing?

Jajaja, no soy DJ… Suelo pinchar discos, es una pasión, solo he tenido suerte de que a algunas personas les gusten las que toco, así que durante los últimos 8 años, más o menos, para las suficientemente locas como para preguntarme.

Where are you and what have you been doing today.

On a train ….on my way to Edinburgh, to play some records, so far just sitting and chatting to a lovely group of cyclists haha

Dónde estás y qué has estado haciendo hoy.

En un tren… de camino a Edimburgo, para pinchar algunos discos. Hasta ahora sólo he estado sentada y conversando con un encantador grupo de ciclistas, jaja.

What was the first idea about. Did you build the sound of Kirsty. Has the sound changed a lot over recent years? What is your criterion.

There is no intentional Kirsty sound, I guess its just maybe a bit raw for some people, but I do listen and play quite varied stuff.

De qué fue la primera idea. ¿Construiste el sonido de Kirsty? ¿El sonido ha cambiado mucho en los últimos años? ¿Cuál es tu criterio?

No hay un sonido intencional de Kirsty, creo que es quizás un poco visceral para algunas personas, pero escucho y toco cosas bastante variadas.

How would you describe your sound, Your music mixes elements of dark wave, post punk, synthpop and so on, how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard any of your songs.

Hmmmmm, its hard to describe, it just reflects how I’m feeling at the time, which is why I find it hard to select records to play out… who knows where my head and heart are at any given time…

¿Cómo describirías el sonido de tus sets? Da la impresión de que la línea musical onda u música mezcla elementos de New Wave, post punk, synthpop y demás? ¿Cómo describirías tu música a alguien que nunca ha escuchado nada de ti?

Hmmmmm, es difícil de describir. Cada set refleja cómo me siento en ese momento, y es por eso que me resulta difícil seleccionar los discos que se reproducirán a continuación… quién sabe dónde esté mi cabeza y mi corazón en un momento dado…

We all know the digital revolution has affected sales but has it affected creativity?

No, of course not.

Todos sabemos que la revolución digital ha afectado las ventas, pero, ¿ha afectado la creatividad?

No, claro que no.

Tell me about your first ever set, do you still remember it vividly?

I remember how nervous and sick I felt, and still get like that now.

Cuéntanos sobre tu primer set, ¿aún lo recuerdas vívidamente?

Recuerdo lo nerviosa y enferma que me sentí, y todavía me sigo poniendo así cada vez que lo recuerdo.

How about the changing musical landscape, do you think you have evolved with it? How do you find the scene now?

The scene, for me now, is just as exciting, if not more so, then way back in the 80’s when I first started going out, and I think we are a lot more open minded with music then back then, well some of us are anyway.

¿Qué tal el cambiante paisaje musical, crees que has evolucionado con él? ¿Cómo encuentras la escena ahora?

La escena es emocionante, más que antes. Desde que empecé a salir, allá por los años 80, cel tiempo me ha demostrado que somos más abiertos de mente con la música que antes. 

Any tips for budding or aspiring Djs?

Be yourself, play what you love, and from the heart, and try not to be like everybody else

¿Algún consejo para los Djs iniciales o aspirantes?

Sé tú mismo, pincha aquello que amas, y desde el corazón, trata de no ser como todos los demás.

To you as a person, what is the most important piece of work you have created in your life?

My daughter of course ☺

Para ti, ¿cuál es la obra más importante que has creado en tu vida?

Mi hija, por supuesto ☺

What are you most hungry for in life?

I could do with some breakfast, if the truth be told, right now.

¿De qué estás más hambrienta en la vida?

Podría desayunar, la verdad, ahora mismo.

What is one deep thought that you’ve had recently?

How can some people seem to read my mind… or is my conscience really loud?

¿Cómo es posible que algunas personas puedan leer mi mente… o es mi conciencia tan fuerte?

What would be your all-time ultimate festival/venue to play at?

Woodstock would of been ace top play at

¿Cuál sería tu mejor festival o lugar, de todos los tiempos, para pinchar?

La verdad es que Woodstock hubiera sido un buen lugar lugar para pinchar.
