INTERVIEW: Cheat Codes and Quarterhead

Esteemed German duo Quarterhead join Cheat Codes for their return to the pitching radar with an explosive collaboration alongside Swedish singer-songwriter KIDDO. Their new track ‘Lucky’ follows directly on Quarterhead’s latest release ‘Eyes On You’, which has already racked up nearly 800,000 Spotify streams, as well as Cheat Codes’ second album HELLRAISERS, Part 2, which features a huge number of well-known acts such as Travis Barker, All Time Low, Bring Me The Horizon, blackbear, Trippie Redd and others. Serving as their first collaborative offering, «Lucky» is now available on all streaming platforms.

We have had the pleasure of talking to Quarterhead and Cheat Codes about their latest release and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

Quarterhead: We met at middle school as teenagers and started a band. We played acoustic pop and wrote our own songs. Over the years production and electronic music became more and more important and here we are!

Cheat Codes: We all come from different parts of the US and bring different musical backgrounds to Cheat Codes - Trevor is from Portland, Matt is from St Louis and Kevi is from Los Angeles! We were first introduced to music by collaborating with friends in our hometowns and eventually started meeting other creatives on Myspace and the internet.

How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now?

Quarterhead: We feel that in this blend between organic music, real songwriting and electronic, sample based music and house is still the core of what we do. We’re trying to stay open minded! Lucky accidents are always waiting round the corner.

Cheat Codes: We love Bella Poarch, Fletcher, Dopamine, KSI and all the new music coming out! Also pop-punk leaning songs with Jxdn, Machine Gun Kelly and Ian Door!

How do you feel that your music influences or impacts your listeners?

Quarterhead: In the end it really comes down to being believable, being real and honest. Music that meets this bar/criteria will connect with people and evoke real emotions. That’s what we aim for.

Cheat Codes: We try to create music with relatable concepts and melodies that people can identify in their everyday lives - it means a lot to us when see our fans at shows singing the words to our songs and telling us stories about how they relate to the music.

What projects are you working on right now? What can you tell us about your last job?

Quarterhead: We’re preparing a lot of live sets these days. There’s some really nice shows coming up - stay tuned!

Cheat Codes: We have a lot more dance music coming in 2022!

Where are you and what have you been doing now?

Cheat Codes: We are in Los Angeles! Just had a green juice and played some basketball before we go to the studio!

Has that sound changed a lot in recent years? What is your musical criteria?

Quarterhead: Sound is always changing. It has to evolve. We’re never trying to recreate something. If a recipe worked once - fine. But we’ll never try it again!

Cheat Codes: The Cheat Codes sounds has no boundaries - we’ve collaborated in almost every genre from pop, dance, punk to country! We love switching up our sound.

Do you feel safe now to play a more experimental sound?

Quarterhead: In music nothing is ever safe. If something really feels safe it might also be boring or just a repetition. So finding the sweet spot in the experimental influences seems to be the key.

Cheat Codes: We are always down to try new ideas and push the envelope! We definitely feel safe with a more experimental sound.

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?

Quarterhead: Yeah definitely! The tools, access to samples and also the digital process are amazing. “Lucky” was written in a zoom session - how awesome is this?

Cheat Codes: It’s made the world more flat and accessible - everybody is just a call or message away. It’s cool to see how easy it is to collaborate in the new digital revolution.

Can you tell us what your present and future projects are?

Cheat Codes: Hellraisers 1, 2 and 3 all possess its own unique sound and each part is symbolic of our own unique musical tastes! Part 1 is pop, Part 2 is punk and Part 3 is dance!
