Hailing from Palmira, Colombia, Andrés draws inspiration from his hometown’s rich cultural rhythms, infusing his sets with authentic energy and Latin soul. From releasing music on respected labels like Sound Tool Records and Psicotropic Records to sharing the stage with icons such as Yaya Tamango and DJ Fronter, Andrés is a force of constant reinvention—both behind the decks and in the studio. As the founder of VooDooGrooVe, he not only curates unforgettable underground events but also nurtures a space for creativity and artistic freedom. Today, we dive into his journey, process, and vision for the future of his sound.
Andres, you've been in the music industry for 10 years now. How would you describe the evolution of your sound throughout this time?
Over these 10 years, my sound has gone through a constant evolution. I started with a strong influence from classic techno, focusing on hypnotic and powerful grooves, but over time, I began incorporating deeper and more minimalistic elements. I've drawn inspiration from different genres, which has allowed me to develop my own style—always keeping the pure essence of techno but with a constantly evolving identity.
As a DJ and producer from Palmira, Colombia, how does your hometown influence your music and performances?
Palmira and its vibrant culture have been a great influence on my music. Growing up in an environment where music and partying are part of the people’s DNA taught me the importance of rhythm and connecting with the audience. The underground scene here has played a key role in my development, and I always try to bring that authentic energy into my performances, blending Latin roots with the signature groove of techno.
You’re known for your dynamic and innovative performances. What is the process behind crafting a live set, and how do you keep it fresh for your audience?
Every live set is a story that unfolds as the session progresses. I like to prepare a selection of tracks that fit the event’s mood, but I also leave room for improvisation and connection with the dancefloor. I use surprise elements, effects, and unexpected transitions to keep the energy high and ensure the audience experiences something unique every time.
You’ve released music on labels like Sound Tool Records and Psicotropic Records. What is your approach to working with these labels, and how do they align with your musical vision?
Every label I work with shares a similar vision to mine: respect for high-quality electronic music, an authentic sound, and the pursuit of new ways of expression within techno. For me, releasing on a label is not just about putting out music—it’s about connecting with a community of artists and listeners who share the same passion. I always aim to bring something fresh and distinctive to each release.
In terms of music production, your style is described as deep and raw. Can you walk us through your creative process when making a new track?
My creative process always starts with an idea or a feeling I want to express. I often draw inspiration from other genres like jazz, rock, or metal and then find ways to translate those influences into techno. I start with a solid rhythmic foundation and, from there, build layers, add textures, and play with the atmosphere until I achieve an immersive and deep groove.
You’ve shared the stage with big names like Yaya Tamango, DJ Fronter, José M, and Tacoman. What has been the most memorable performance or collaboration, and why?
Every performance has been special, but one of the most memorable was when I shared the stage with Yaya Tamango. The energy that night was incredible—the connection with the crowd was total, and the event’s atmosphere made everything flow naturally.
You are the founder of VooDooGrooVe, an event production company. How does VooDooGrooVe contribute to your artistic vision, and what sets your events apart from others?
VooDooGrooVe is not just an event production company; it is an extension of my artistic vision. It has allowed me to create a space where I can experiment with music, atmosphere, and audience energy on a deeper level. Through these events, I not only share my sound but also connect with other artists and the underground community, fostering an ecosystem where creativity flows freely.
Additionally, it has helped me develop a greater understanding of how live music impacts the audience, allowing me to refine my ability to read the crowd and adapt my sets in real time. Each event is an opportunity to innovate and explore new formats, strengthening my artistic identity both in production and performance.
Looking to the future, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
My goal is to keep exploring and evolving my sound while staying true to the essence that defines me. I want to bring my music to new audiences, collaborate with artists I admire, and further develop VooDooGrooVe as a key player in the scene. In the coming years, I hope to continue experimenting with new sounds and technologies while maintaining the groove and authenticity that characterize my music.
