Madrid-based producer/DJ GAZZI reveals his stunning new EP ‘Tus Ojos’ (meaning ‘Your Eyes’), out on 7th February via Parisian label Ano Ano.
GAZZI, the musical alias of Pablo Jiménez, proudly hails from Linares, Jaén in the historical community of Andalusia near Spain. Saying that, his sound would make you think he was a regular at FWD night in London. Heavily influenced by the founders of that sound, the likes of Burial, Four Tet et al. His music blends post-dubstep, UK bass, deep house, and breakbeat. Now based in Madrid, GAZZI has performed at top venues like Nitsa and festivals such as Sonár and Primavera Sound, where in 2022 he performed his first ever Boiler Room set.
Each of the five tracks here evoke GAZZI’s distinctly floaty, gentle and melodic house and techno sound. Complete with breathy melancholic vocal phrases, bubbling raw synths and sharp, swinging drums, it’s an essential release for fans of Four Tet, Floating Points or Overmono.
The intro track ‘The Way’ sets the scene for the EP excellently. The track centres around a vocal “It’s the way you look at me/make me feel” sample that loops endlessly - pushing deeper into your psyche, eventually merging to become the backbone of the track. Heavy pads swirl and embrace the listener, while in the foreground, a warm stabby synth melody takes you on its own journey.
On the title track ‘Tus Ojos’, bells fall angelically like rain onto a skippy, garage-flecked house beat. It’s a truly beautiful piece, with the reverb-drenched Spanish vocals of rising Príncipe artist ‘NIDIA’ providing the track’s focal point, expanding the track out into a cavernous heater.
‘Diving Clouds’ is straight up hot-to-the-touch dancefloor fire. In true GAZZI style, we’re given a busy, loopy 4x4 beat laced groove with delicious percussion, elevated through expansive vocals and synths. An off-kilter, fuzzy, raw synth seeps its way into every corner of the track, providing a sinister growl in the low end that’s matched by a smooth, R&B-style vocal at the high end of the frequency.
If you’re not yet aware of the rising, rousing sound of GAZZI, the ‘Tus Ojos’ EP is a fine place to start. Be aware, though - this will not be the last you hear from this talented Andalusian artist.
